The article analyses the symbolic value of Julie Payette’s appointment as the new governor general. This successful astronaut and engineer woman is the fourth woman to be governor general and certainly one of many firsts. Some may have been disappointed by her appointment as, according to them, choosing an Indigenous man or woman as the next governor general could have been a first step towards reconciliation in Canada. Yet, Julie Payette’s appointment is still a step towards progress as she embodies women excellence in science after a period of latency and regression under the Harper’s government in both science and diversity-related issues.
